Heath Care

The health and well-being of campers and staff is a Camp Buckskin priority. In particular, since helping campers gain knowledge and skills is our primary goal, it stands to reason that we want everyone to be healthy, as this will maximize the learning – and fun.

The general health care needs of campers and staff are overseen by our Health Care Manager, who is an experienced Registered Nurse (RN). As part of our ACA accreditation we have an RN on duty 24/7. The Health Center includes a waiting room, examination room, and several rooms for campers or staff to lie down if needed.

Ely has a very modern clinic and hospital; any health concerns of significance would be brought to the attention of the on call physician in town. Because of the structured nature of camp and our emphasis on safety, we believe camp is able to prevent incidents from occurring which otherwise might require a trip into town.

Medications

In addition to tending to the general health care needs, the nursing staff (RNs and nursing assistants) supervises the distribution of medications. We encourage campers who benefit from medications to continue their regimens at camp, as this will help them learn more and maximize their gains from the program. As a point of reference, approximately 85-88% of our campers take one or more types of medication.

Because of the number of campers on medication, their busy schedules, and the size of the campgrounds, it is not practical to dispense medications at varying times throughout the day. Consequently, camp passes medication during meal times (8:00 am, 12:30 pm, 5:30 pm) and at bedtime (9:00 pm). Parents are encouraged to discuss this schedule or any resulting questions with their child’s physician.

Due to the amount of medications that our campers take on a daily basis we require that all medication be blister packed. This allows us to efficiently utilize our nursing staff and provides greater safety in medication administration.
