Leader-in-Training Program

The Leader-in-Training program (LIT) is a supplemental program that focuses specifically on developing various leadership roles and responsibilities as a camper. Many of our campers aspire to one day be part of our staff. The LIT program is designed to help campers prepare for this transition. All LIT candidates are individuals who have previously attended Camp Buckskin. Consequently, the candidates have a good understanding of camp and camp has a good of understanding of them.

Typically, LIT’s are at least 15 years old. These campers have demonstrated an ability to be a positive leader and role model for other campers. They have taken on additional responsibilities and followed through with these duties independently or with minimal staff support. The LIT program requires the camper to be able to self- monitor their own behaviors and hold themselves accountable for the choices they make. Only individuals who are recommended by staff can be accepted into the LIT program.

LIT’s have two main areas of responsibility: helping in the main activity and helping with their assigned cabin group. In the activity they learn how to teach other campers the skills and knowledge they will need in order to be successful. In their cabin group they are given opportunities to work on their leadership skills and get a better understanding of what it would be like to be a staff member. LIT’s are given guidance and direction by our Leadership Coordinator on a daily basis.
