Who We Serve

Friends at CampEveryone could benefit from Camp Buckskin's program - as almost everyone could improve their social interactions, have more friends, or would like to feel better about themselves and their abilities. Individuals with unrealized or underdeveloped potential, those with deficits in their academic or social skills, or who exhibit low self esteem, benefit more, or perhaps their gains are more visible, than other children.

While not mandatory, many of our campers have AD/HD, Learning Disabilities, Aspergers, are adopted, or have similar needs. They are of average to above average intelligence, and have an interest in making changes in attitudes and/or habits.

Commonalities of Our Campers

Our campers have many things in common. Academically, they may have demonstrated a pattern of under-achievement. Our campers could have difficulty with organizational skills (bringing home, completing or turning in assignments) or staying on and completing tasks. They often have difficulty with transitions, and while they set high aspirations they may lack the necessary follow through. Consequently, our campers have experienced an inordinate amount of frustration with academics and school in general.Girls in costumes

Socially, our campers may have difficulties initiating or keeping conversations on a relevant track, or not interrupting others. They often have problems identifying verbal or nonverbal social cues. As a result, they may have trouble making or keeping friends. In addition, they may be argumentative or have trouble following directions. In general they may have difficulty accepting an appropriate level of responsibility for their choices.

Because of their difficulties in the academic and social skill areas, these youth often exhibit a lowered self esteem. Camp Buckskin believes two things must happen to effectively address this problem. Our campers need to better realize the potential they possess and develop this potential. Similarly, they need to minimize or eliminate the deficits which prevent them from utilizing existing strengths and talents. By developing their potential and reducing their deficits, the individual will achieve the social and academic success of which they are capable - and due!

The GuysEligibility

In keeping with the preventive or early intervention philosophy of the program, many children are in the elementary grades. Because of the ability to diagnose these needs earlier, the camp begins working with children at age six and prefers to begin helping at the earliest age possible. Camp Buckskin will continue to assist individual’s social and academic skill development through age eighteen.

Due to the developmental needs of adolescents, those who are thirteen or older need to be considered on an individual basis if it would be their first summer at Camp Buckskin. We try to accept all who could benefit from the program, however, the program is not designed to serve youth who have a chronic mental or physical illness, severe emotional/behavioral problems, or who are adjudicated.

If there are questions regarding a child's appropriateness, we will openly discuss these concerns. Since every child is unique we appreciate getting to know each of our campers and parents individually. While we realize that a face to face meeting is not always feasible, we can certainly discuss a child's needs over the phone.
