Cook

Position Purpose: To prepare and serve food for campers and staff, maintain food service facilities and equipment in a sanitary condition; and do related work as required. There are multiple cooks to cover the various shifts required of the kitchen.

Reports to: Food Service Manager, Program Director, and Camp Director

Essential Job Functions: The cook will assist in preparing a schedule of meals to serve to a large group of staff and campers in the dining hall. The food must be healthy and include options for campers and staff who have special dietary needs. The cook assists with ordering supplies, preparing meals, supervises the kitchen assistants, and cleans up at the end of the meal. The cook performs light maintenance and repairs in the kitchen and dining hall as needed.

Qualifications: The camp cook must know safe and nutritious methods of food preparation. They must also know the standards of the American Camp Association as well as the county health code regulations. The camp cook must have a ServeSafe certificate or current State of MN Food Service Manager license. Most camp cooks have a high school diploma and experience working in a kitchen that serves large groups of people, such as a restaurant.

Other Job Duties:

  • Work together with Food Service Manager and other shift cooks.
  • Participate in overall staff orientation as possible.
  • Work with other shift cooks to receive and store food stuffs and supplies in a safe manner.
  • Prepares vegetables, fruits, salads, hot meals, and desserts.
  • Cleans work area and disposes of refuse.
  • Washes or ensures the safe washing of pots, pans, dishes, and utensils.
  • Function as general all round cook for meals, and assist the other shift cooks.
  • Clean and prepare food service areas for use. Help close kitchen down for off-season.
  • Follow all rules of local and state health regulations.
  • These are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of sanitation requirements in food preparation and storage.
  • Knowledge and use of ServeSafe safe practices to prepare, cook, and serve food.
  • Organized and detail oriented with good problem solving skills.
  • Knowledge of the uses of kitchen utensils and equipment and the operation thereof.
  • Ability to work under direct supervision and cooperate with other staff personnel.

Cabin/Flex Counselor and Activity Instructor or "Counselor"

Position Purpose: Counselors are the primary caregivers for each camper. The Counselor is responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills.

Reports To: Activity Head, Cabin and Activity Supervisors, Program Director, Camp Director

Essential Job Functions:

1) Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in the cabin group, within activities, and throughout the camp in order to meet the intended camper outcomes.

  • Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth.
  • Assure campers are properly supervised at all times, which is a 24/7 responsibility.
  • Be aware of and implement safety guidelines (including the 3 Rights and the rules that support the rights) and consistently enforce the established expectations.
  • Observe and manage the campers' behaviors. Consistent follow through of clearly established limits using both positive reinforcement and consequences to encourage appropriate behavior.

2) Participate in the development and implementation of program activities for campers within the mission to produce the desired outcomes.

  • Responsible for leading and assisting with the teaching of activities.
  • Actively participate in all program areas as assigned.
  • Provide for the progression of activities within the framework of individual and group interests and abilities.
  • Assist in program areas such as Archery, Arts & Crafts, Canoeing, Nature Studies, Riflery, Reading, and any other activities as directed.
3) Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.
  • Provide for the daily care of each camper within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs (wearing clean clothes, personal hygiene, bug dope, sun screen).
  • Ensure that campers receive their medications as directed by their physician, and notifying the camp nurse or program staff of any concerns.
  • Be alert to campers and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems, and discuss with Camp Nurse and/or Program and Camp Director when appropriate.
  • Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care and use, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to Camp Director.
4) Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
  • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules, procedures, and personnel policies.
  • Set a good example to campers and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices.
  • Be respectful and fair to all campers and other staff members.

  • Contribute to verbal and written evaluations and communication as requested (cabin journals, social skill assessments, and goal attainments). Handing in all paperwork on time when requested.
  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning, and leading those as assigned.

Kitchen Assistant and Counselor in Training

Position Purpose: Kitchen Assistants perform a vital part of serving the camp meals prepared in a safe and healthy manner. Counselors In Training learn and observe from first hand experience the Camp Buckskin program.

Essential Job Functions:
1) Assist in the production of safe and healthy meals.
  • Apply knowledge of food safety and personal cleanliness while working in the kitchen/dining hall building.
  • Assist the Cooks in preparation of meals for the camp.
  • Keep serve ware, cookware, and food serving areas clean and sanitary.

Maintenance Assistant

Position Purpose: The Maintenance Assistant is responsible for the day to day maintenance and upkeep of all buildings and equipment, as well as overseeing the workings of the water, septic, electric, and other systems that affect the functioning of the physical plant. It is the responsibility of the maintenance assistant to keep the facility safe, attractive, and in good condition.

Reports To: Head of Maintenance, Program Director, Operations Manager, and Camp Director

Essential Job Functions:

  • This position calls for a self-starter with good knowledge of the building trade.
  • The Maintenance Assistant should have the ability to work well with others, be in good physical condition, and have the ability to work autonomously.
  • Responsible for assisting the Head Maintenance staff with general up keep and improvements to the camp grounds and physical plant including but not limited to: mowing, weed whacking, recycle pick-up, trash removal, checking physical plan systems and notifying the Director or Head of Maintenance with potential problems.
  • Assisting the Directors when needed.
  • Other maintenance tasks that may arise throughout the summer.
  • Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior, by following and upholding all safety and security rules, procedures, and personnel policies.
Other Job Duties:
  • Work with the campers in the evening in various recreational activities, and being a big brother or big sister for a cabin, which includes reading to them before bedtime.

Camp Nurse

Position Purpose: Camp Nurse will evaluate and treat campers and staff for minor injuries and illnesses, supervise and ensure medication policies and procedures at camp, keep a log of Health Center visits, give supportive advice to counselors and other camp staff if requested, and identify health problems serious enough to require a physician's attention.

Reports to: Area Supervisor, Program Director, Camp Director

Essential Job Functions:

1) Caring for the medical needs of campers and staff at Camp Buckskin

  • Oversee the health and safety of 100 campers and 50 staff.
  • Conduct initial health screening of all campers.
  • Provide medical attention to campers and staff with general health concerns and document in Health Log.
  • Distribute and record camper medications.
  • Maintain Health Center record and medical forms.
  • Supervise the Health Care assistants.
  • Communicate specific camper health needs (allergies, special diets) to staff.
  • Communicate with Camp Directors about camper health issues.
  • Schedule appointments for sick/injured campers or staff to the hospital or clinic.
  • Be a "summer mom" to our campers.
Other Job Duties:
  • Act as a liaison with local doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies.
  • Be present at the registration of each camp session to check in and file the incoming health forms, record the individual problems, and note medications.
  • Stocking First Aid supplies in the Health Center and all areas of camp and controlling their outflow.
  • Safeguarding the camper's prescription medications; administering the medications at the prescribed dosages and hours.
  • Participate in camp activities and events.

Health Care Assistant

Position Purpose: Health Care Assistant will assist the Camp Nurse with providing for the health care needs of campers and staff. They are responsible for passing and recording camper medications.

Reports to: Camp Nurse, Activity Head, Activity Supervisors, Program Director, Camp Director

Essential Job Functions:

1)  Participate in the development and implementation of program activities for campers within the mission to produce the desired outcomes.

  • Responsible for leading and assisting with the teaching of activities.
  • Actively participate in all program areas as assigned.
  • Provide for the progression of activities within the framework of individual and group interests and abilities.
  • Assist in program areas such as Archery, Arts&Crafts, Canoeing, Nature Studies, Riflery, Reading, and all other camp activities as directed.

Office Assistant

Position Purpose: To continually work to establish and maintain the camp purpose which is to improve the self-concept, develop self-confidence, and encourage each child to stand on his own two feet to such a degree as to lead a healthy, normal life. Each child is given instructions and the opportunity to work and excel in a variety of activities. This gives campers a new idea of their own self worth (self concept) and gives them a new confidence in their abilities (self confidence) through learning a new skill.

Reports to: Program Director, Operations Manager, and Camp Director

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assist the Camp Director, Program Director, and Operations Manager in the daily duties of running the camp office and support the organization of the camp program and activities.
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality toward information that is received, discussed, and learned about.
  • Establish and maintain control of the camp office.
  • Assist in communication of pertinent information to all activities, staff, and campers to ensure smooth running of the camp program.
Other Job Duties:
  • Typing, filing, organization of camper/staff/program information.
  • Answer the camp phone, getting precise caller information, and message specifics.
  • Assist and direct camp personnel when they come to the office for supplies, questions, etc.
  • Keep Camp Director, Program Director, Operations Manager, Nurse, and other staff informed of all appropriate information.
  • Keep information that you come across in the course of your duties confidential - much is of a personal nature regarding campers, parents, and employees and should not be transferred to others.
  • Work with Program Director and Program Supervisors to generate all necessary lists and schedules.
  • Keep an emergency evacuation folder each session.
  • Work with teachers for reading program materials.
  • Organize and generate evaluation forms for campers (Goal Attainment, Reading Evaluation, Social Skills Assessment).
  • Keep track of petty cash, staff canteen bills, camper field trip money, etc.
  • Sort and deliver mail daily. Ensure adequate postage supplies.
  • Attend to laundry area. Count/sort clean linens, make sure dirty linens are brought to laundry area and clean linens dispensed.
  • Work with Program Director for Olympic Day schedules. Make awards for Olympic Day (Grand Champion).
  • Keep inventory of all supplies and equipment in the office and storeroom. If supplies are needed make sure they are ordered. Pack away supplies and clothing at the end of the season and take an end-of the-season inventory.
  • Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.
  • Be alert to camper and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems, and discuss with Camp Nurse, and/or Program Director and Camp Director when appropriate.
  • Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care and use, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to Camp Director.
  • Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior. This includes: following and upholding all safety and security rules, procedures, and personnel policies.

Reading Teacher

Position Purpose: The Reading Teacher is responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills.

Reports to: Activity Head, Activity Supervisors, Program Director, and Camp Director

Essential Job Functions:

1)  Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in reading, writing activities, and throughout the camp in order to meet the intended camper outcomes.

  • Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement and empowerment of youth.
  • Assure campers are properly supervised at all times.
  • Be aware of and implement safety guidelines (including the 3 Rights and the rules that support the rights) and consistently enforce the established expectations.
  • Observe and manage the campers' behaviors. Consistent follow through of clearly established limits using both positive reinforcement and consequences to encourage appropriate behavior.
2) Organize and instruct the reading activity for campers within the mission to produce the desired outcomes.
  • Responsible for assessing campers' abilities and providing appropriate educational strategies.
  • Provide for the camper's progression in their reading and writing abilities.
  • Develop and write a series of four contracts for every camper in their reading class.
  • Work to improve the campers reading and writing skill sets, but also their attitude towards reading and writing.
  • Assist in program areas and all other camp activities as directed.
  • Actively participate in all program areas as assigned.
3)  Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.
  • Provide for the daily care of each camper within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs (wearing clean clothes, personal hygiene, bug dope, sun screen).
  • Ensure that campers receive their medications as directed by their physician, and notifying the camp nurse or program staff of any concerns.
  • Be alert to camper and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems, and discuss with Camp Nurse and/or Program and Camp Director when appropriate.

Wilderness Tripping Staff

Our wilderness tripping staff are responsible for planning, organizing, and leading our Senior Camper Challenge Program. The SCCP is for our returnees who have demonstrated the necessary swimming and canoeing skills, but also the group participation abilities to meet the demands of this program.

A cabin group of 7 campers and 2 counselors go on three canoeing trips of varying lengths into the Northwoods canoeing, portaging, swimming, fishing, and camping. Our goal is to further their growth and development by working on leadership, cooperation, communication, and problem solving skills.

Applicants must be at least 19 years of age or have completed your first year of college. Prior camping and tripping experience is preferred. You must have an interest and desire to work with children and adolescents who have social skill and academic needs. You must be a positive role model for our campers with a willingness to work as part of a team. Must have current CPR, First Aid, Life Guarding, and Wilderness First Aid certifications.
